IGN Gives Resident Evil: Night of the Outbreak an 8/10

Well, this is a nice surprise. IGN has dropped its review for Resident Evil: Night of the Outbreak, and it walked away with a solid 8/10.

If you haven't been keeping up, this one is an action-horror film written and directed by Zach Cregger, the guy behind Weapons. It's based on the Resident Evil games we all know, and it's being positioned as a full-on reboot of the movie series. It hits theaters in the US on September 18.

So what did IGN think? Their take is that the movie keeps things refreshingly simple. The whole focus is on putting its lead through the worst night of his life, and that makes for a tense, exciting survival horror ride. Cregger's distinct style apparently adds a lot to the mix too.

Austin Abrams plays Brian, a medical courier who somehow ends up as our hero. IGN calls him genuinely charismatic, and honestly, that sounds about right for a guy who's completely outmatched. He's basically dragged through hell by Cregger, surrounded by a bunch of well-realized mutants and monsters.

According to the review, Cregger nails the practical creature effects, the slow-building dread, and that signature humor. Put it all together, and IGN says this is Resident Evil finally showing off the kind of form the original games deserved.

If you're a longtime fan who's been burned by some of the previous film adaptations, that's probably exactly what you want to hear. A tight, scary night with monsters and a lead who's in way over his head? Sounds like Resident Evil to me.
