If you thought DLSS was all about free frames, DLSS 5 just flipped the script. According to PC Gamer's testing, Nvidia's latest upscaling tech absolutely hammers the RTX 5080 in NBA 2K27. At 1440p with max settings, the card averaged 230 FPS natively. Turn on DLSS 5, and that number crashes to 93 FPS—a brutal 73% drop. Even worse, 1% lows plummet from 93 FPS to just 37 FPS. Ouch.
And it's not just one game. Notebookcheck's tests show DLSS 5 eats up roughly 58% of the RTX 5080's performance at 4K. Nvidia had previously estimated a 50% to 60% hit, but the real-world results are even worse. To barely stay above 40 FPS, you basically need an RTX 5080-class GPU. That's a tough pill to swallow for anyone hoping to max out the latest titles.
So why the massive drop? DLSS 5 is a completely different beast from previous versions. Older DLSS helped your GPU "cheat" by rendering at a lower resolution and using AI to fill in the gaps, boosting frame rates. DLSS 5, however, introduces 3D-guided neural rendering—AI regenerates lighting, materials, and entire scenes to chase Hollywood-level realism. The catch? It demands a ton of computational power.
Nvidia calls this algorithm a "single-step pixel-space diffusion model." Think of AI image generators that take 10+ seconds to create a picture. Now imagine doing that in 16.7 milliseconds per frame. To make it work, the game engine first does a basic render, then hands motion vectors and other data to DLSS 5, which uses a neural network to spit out the final image almost instantly. At 4K 60 FPS, that's nearly 500 million pixels per second. Your GPU is basically sprinting a marathon.
Despite the steep performance cost, Nvidia insists this is important—even worth it. The company's real focus is the neural rendering technology behind DLSS 5. The gaming performance we're seeing now is just the starting point of a bigger revolution. In other words, Nvidia is playing the long game, betting that AI-driven rendering will eventually redefine how games look.
