MTG's Darkhold Destiny Brings Marvel's Spooky Side to the Table

Magic: The Gathering's third Marvel set, Darkhold Destiny, arrives April 2027 with werewolves, vampires, witches, and Marvel's first original MTG story.

MTG's Darkhold Destiny Brings Marvel's Spooky Side to the Table

Ever wondered what happens when Magic: The Gathering wanders into Marvel's darkest corners? With Halloween creeping up on us, Wizards of the Coast has just pulled back the curtain on MTG Marvel Darkhold Destiny — and it's leaning hard into the supernatural.

Launching April 9, 2027, and up for pre-order right now at Amazon, TCGPlayer, and other tabletop retailers, this set promises "the growl of werewolves at the door, the hissing of vampires who thirst for divine blood, [and] the chanting of witches as they enact their dark arts." Yeah, it's that kind of party. The Darkhold itself is Marvel's infamous book of the damned, so a supernatural focus makes total sense — and it gives heroes like Doctor Strange, Blade, and the Scarlet Witch room to shine.

Here's where things get interesting. Darkhold Destiny isn't just about Marvel's gothic underbelly. It also teases a "dimension-hopping narrative" where players learn the secrets of the Dark Dimension (yes, the "Dormammu, I've come to bargain" one) and join forces with Marvel's pantheon of gods. That's a big shift, because the previous two Marvel sets — Spider-Man last year and Marvel Super Heroes this summer — mostly celebrated characters rather than telling their own story.

Speaking of story, this set features MTG Marvel's first original narrative, introducing a brand-new character who'll debut in a full comic this February. The comic is being written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, but the story itself was crafted by Magic's Narrative specifically with MTG in mind — so it should feel properly bespoke rather than bolted on.

On the product side, it sounds like we're getting the works: the usual boosters, plus Commander decks and Scene Boxes. If you're a collector or a Commander fan, there's plenty to keep an eye on.

Now, the elephant in the room. Universes Beyond crossovers are wildly popular, but they're also controversial — plenty of players feel they're taking up too much of Magic's annual release slate. That tension got worse in 2026 when MTG head designer Mark Rosewater said fans need to adapt or "walk away" if they don't like Universes Beyond. An in-depth original story won't erase that resentment, but it could chip away at the idea that these sets are quick cash-ins.

And hey, this isn't the only Marvel news this week — the Lego Marvel Skyline just got revealed, complete with absurd deep cuts like the 'Thanos Copter.'

So, what do you think? Does an original story make you more interested in Darkhold Destiny, or are you still on the fence about Universes Beyond? Will you be picking this one up?
