Disgaea Creator Says No to AI-Written Stories

Sohei Niikawa sees AI as a useful tool but has zero interest in letting it write characters or plots, saying it's just not fun.

Ever wondered if your favorite game stories could one day be written by a machine? Well, for Disgaea creator Sohei Niikawa, that's a hard pass.

Niikawa recently shared his thoughts on AI in game development, and his stance is pretty clear: he sees the benefit of AI as a tool, but he has "absolutely no interest" in using it to write stories. For him, letting AI create characters and plots just isn't fun or interesting.

That's a refreshing take, especially with all the AI hype swirling around the industry. Niikawa isn't saying AI is useless—he acknowledges it can be a helpful tool. But when it comes to the creative heart of a game, he wants no part of it.

Think about it: Disgaea is known for its quirky characters, over-the-top plots, and unique humor. Those are the things that make the series special, and they come from human imagination. Niikawa seems to believe that handing that job to an AI would strip away the very soul of the experience.

His comments echo a broader debate in gaming: where should AI fit in? Some studios are experimenting with AI for art, coding, or even dialogue. But Niikawa draws a line at storytelling. For him, the joy of creating—and presumably the joy of playing—comes from human-crafted narratives.

So what does this mean for future Disgaea games? Probably nothing changes. Niikawa will keep doing what he does best: crafting weird, wonderful worlds by hand. And honestly, that's probably exactly what fans want.

What do you think? Should AI stay out of game stories, or is there room for it? Let us know in the comments!
