Ever cracked a booster pack and felt that rush when you see multiple rares? Now imagine opening a pack where every single card is a rare or mythic. That's exactly what Wizards of the Coast is bringing to Magic: The Gathering with 'God Packs.'
In a recent blog post, Wizards announced that both Play Boosters and Collector Boosters will have a chance to be God Packs, which are entirely made up of rares and mythics. For Play Boosters, the odds are roughly 1 in 1,000, while Collector Boosters are much more generous at 1 in 300. So if you're a Collector Booster fan, your chances of hitting the jackpot are significantly higher.
But what exactly is inside a God Pack? For Play Boosters, you'll get one special 'God Pack celebration card' (whatever that ends up being), along with 10 non-foil rares and mythics. Then there are two non-foil 'Booster Fun' variants (think showcase and borderless cards) and two foil 'Booster Fun' cards. Collector Boosters take it up a notch: you'll find one foil land, three foil default frame rares and/or mythics, three non-foil 'Booster Fun' variants, and five foil 'Booster Fun' variants.
Wizards isn't stopping there—they're also increasing the drop rates for foil rare and mythic rare cards across all booster packs to make them more exciting to open. However, it's not all good news. Foil commons and uncommons are being removed from Play Boosters entirely, and Collector Boosters are being trimmed down to 12 cards by removing three foil common and uncommon slots. Wizards admits that removing cards doesn't make opening Collector Boosters more exciting, but they explain that most people skip past those cards anyway. In their blog, they said, 'Removing them isn't about shrinking the experience; it's about making room—in terms of both printing capacity and player psychology—for cards people actually get excited about.'
Still, some players might miss those commons and uncommons, especially since some see constructed play and can rise in price—like Aetherdrift's Stock Up. It's a trade-off that could have unforeseen consequences. These booster changes will go live with the release of Nauctis: The Sunken Realm and will carry over to every in-universe set going forward. Universes Beyond sets will get the changes starting in 2028.
So, are you ready to chase that God Pack high? Will you be picking up more boosters when these changes hit? Let us know in the comments!
