Were you worried that Marathon's extraction mode might get left behind after Bungie announced new PvE and deathmatch modes? Well, you can breathe a sigh of relief. Game Director Del Chafe has stepped in to confirm that extraction isn't going anywhere.
Last week, Bungie revealed a roadmap that includes PvE and experimental PvP modes for something called Symbiosis in December. That got some folks nervous, especially since the devs had previously admitted that Marathon flopped because it was too hard. Fans started to fear that the hardcore extraction mode would be neglected in favor of the new, more accessible modes.
But Chafe took to the Marathon Development Team Twitter account on September 30, 2026, to set the record straight. "We want to be clear, Extraction is still a major part of Marathon, and we're also going to continue updating it as we look to the future of the game," he said. He also asked for feedback: "We'd love to hear from you on what you're enjoying about Extraction today, what you think needs work, and what you wish was there."
And fans definitely had thoughts. Marathon streamer Drewsky pointed out that spawn rushes and harsh death spirals that price players out are among the biggest problems. Another user, nsorrey36, echoed that sentiment, saying, "Echoing a lot of sentiment where it feels like lobby wiping is the go-to strategy of the run." So it sounds like the community wants fewer spawn-camping nightmares and more balanced risk-reward.
It seems like the ideal fix would be to introduce those new modes in the Symbiosis update while also finding a way to discourage extraction players from immediately rushing spawn points to catch others off guard. And luckily, Bungie appears to be listening to all the feedback, so there's a real chance extraction could look very different a year from now.
All of this is happening while Bungie is also working on bringing Destiny back. Earlier this month, the developer reassured gamers that it wasn't done with Destiny and is working on restoring vaulted Destiny 2 content. So it's a busy time for the studio, but at least Marathon fans know extraction is still a priority.
What do you think about the future of Marathon's extraction mode? Will you be jumping back in, or are you more excited for the new PvE and PvP modes? Let us know in the comments!
