Marvel Rivals Cracks Down on Toxic Speech with Harsher Penalties

NetEase promises significantly harsher penalties for severe or repeat offenders in Marvel Rivals, doubling down on speech moderation after player complaints about toxic behavior.

Marvel Rivals Cracks Down on Toxic Speech with Harsher Penalties

Ever jumped into a Marvel Rivals match only to be hit with a barrage of insults or hate speech? You're not alone. The hero shooter has struggled with toxic players, and developer NetEase is now promising to clean things up.

In a recent online post, NetEase said it's doubling down on moderating the game. "A positive communication environment is a vital component of any team-based competitive experience," the studio tweeted. They acknowledged that insults, harassment, discrimination, and hate speech—whether in text or voice chat—not only hurt players but also ruin communication and the overall match experience.

So what's changing? NetEase has "further escalated our penalties for speech violations." Sanctions will now depend on the nature, severity, and history of the violation, with "significantly harsher penalties" for severe offenses or repeated violations. The dev also stressed that while they respect differing opinions, normal discussion should never become an excuse for malicious attacks or harassment. "Our stance on moderating toxic speech is clear and resolute," they added. "We will absolutely not treat these behaviors as acceptable simply because they are unfortunately common in competitive gaming."

This isn't a one-time fix, either. NetEase calls speech moderation an "ongoing, long-term commitment" and promises to continually refine their systems to spot and penalize toxic behavior. Many players in the Marvel Rivals subreddit agree that toxic speech has seeped too deep into the game. One person wrote, "I haven't played in weeks. The game has its fun and its problems, but what really put me off was not being able to actually use chat without players letting off their in real-life racial frustrations on other players in a Disney Marvel game."

However, not everyone is confident in NetEase's ability to identify actual toxic behavior. Some players report that the game sometimes incorrectly flags most swear words—even ones used in compliments—as offenses. "If they have a human review toxicity instead of an AI that would be far better," another player wrote.

It's a tricky balance: cracking down on hate speech while not punishing innocent players. NetEase's commitment is a step in the right direction, but the execution will be key. Will you be jumping back into Marvel Rivals after these changes? What do you think about the new penalties? Let us know in the comments!
