Did you breathe a sigh of relief when you heard StarCraft is coming back? Well, here's some good news: it won't be locked to Xbox. Blizzard has confirmed that its newly announced StarCraft shooter won't be an Xbox exclusive, though the studio is staying coy about exactly where it will land.
The game was revealed at BlizzCon 2026 with a 2030 release date, and according to Kotaku, a Blizzard spokesperson said it won't "be exclusive." But when pressed on whether that means a PlayStation release alongside Xbox and PC, Blizzard would only say that calling it an Xbox exclusive would be incorrect. So, yeah, it's not exclusive—but we still don't know the full platform lineup.
It's easy to see why this is murky. Microsoft acquired Blizzard in 2023 as part of its massive $75.4 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard. Since then, Xbox has flip-flopped on exclusivity: it brought franchises like Forza and Halo to PS5, but recently pivoted back to making some games, like Gears of War: E-Day, Xbox-console exclusive. On top of that, Xbox announced more layoffs today following even larger cuts this summer as part of CEO Asha Sharma's "reset." Blizzard hasn't been hit by these latest layoffs yet, but reporter Jason Schreier suggested earlier this month that it could be next. Where that leaves Blizzard's franchises is anyone's guess.
One thing seems certain: StarCraft will launch on PC. Every previous StarCraft RTS is playable there, and Blizzard is a PC-first developer with decades of history across Diablo, Warcraft, and its own Battle.net launcher. But in recent years, more Blizzard games have come to consoles—Diablo 4 just hit Switch 2 last week, and the upcoming WoW: Forever will have full controller support, making people wonder if a console version of World of Warcraft is on the way.
Given how early StarCraft was announced, it's possible even Blizzard isn't sure what platforms it'll be on. By 2030, we'll likely have a new generation of Xbox and PlayStation hardware, so the real question might be whether StarCraft also launches on our current (and by then, last-gen) consoles.
There's still plenty we don't know about the StarCraft shooter, but Blizzard did share a few details with GameSpot. Creative director Dan Hay said the game is "focusing on single player," it will be third-person, and players can expect to encounter the Protoss as well as the Zerg. So at least we know it's not just a vague promise—there's a real game taking shape.
