NBA 2K25 Server Shutdown: What You Need to Know Before It's Gone

Did you just get into NBA 2K25? Well, you might want to sit down for this. 2K Sports has announced that the game is getting delisted and its servers are shutting down—and yes, that means even single-player modes like MyCareer and MyTeam will become unplayable.

Here's the breakdown: NBA 2K25 will be removed from sale on October 30, 2026, and then fully discontinued on December 31, 2026. If you already own the game, you can still redownload it and play offline after the shutdown. But starting January 1, 2026, all multiplayer games and every online mode will be gone. That means MyCareer and MyTeam—modes that many of you pour hours into—will be unplayable. You also won't be able to buy or earn any more virtual currency.

So what will still work? 2K Sports confirmed that Play Now, MyNBA, The W, and MyWNBA modes will remain available after January 1, 2027. But the heart of the game for a lot of players—building your MyPlayer, grinding for badges, collecting cards—will be shut off. It's a tough pill to swallow, especially since NBA 2K25 only launched in October 2024. That's about two years of full online support.

This isn't a new pattern for the NBA 2K series. NBA 2K24 was discontinued on January 31, 2026, and NBA 2K23 went dark a year before that. It's basically a set schedule: keep servers up for roughly two years, then move on. For 2K and other sports game publishers, it's about shifting resources to newer, more popular titles. There could also be licensing and legal requirements tied to all the real-world players and brands in the game.

Still, players are upset—and rightfully so. Two years feels short when you've invested significant time into your team. You grind for months, get attached to your squad, and then poof—it's gone. Compare that to GTA Online, which comes from 2K parent company Take-Two's Rockstar. That game has been online and playable since 2013, reportedly making millions every month. So it makes sense Rockstar keeps supporting it. But for NBA 2K, the cycle continues.

The newest entry, NBA 2K27, launched in September 2026. If the pattern holds, it could be delisted in October 2028 and shut down for good in January 2029. So if you're still playing NBA 2K25, enjoy it while you can. And if you're thinking about buying it? You might want to think twice.

What do you think about this two-year shutdown cycle? Will you be picking up NBA 2K27, or are you done with the series? Let us know in the comments!
