Ever wonder just how massive GTA 6's launch is going to be? Well, early preorder data is here, and it's looking absolutely wild.
According to Sensor Tower, GTA 6 preorders are pacing a staggering 148% ahead of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 over a comparable period before release. That's digital preorders in the US only, but still—MW2 was the biggest of the bunch among other major releases like Diablo 4, Hogwarts Legacy, and Marvel's Spider-Man. So GTA 6 isn't just winning; it's lapping the competition.
And the numbers keep piling up. Sensor Tower's tracker says GTA 6 has already sold more than 6.45 million copies, generating over $630 million. That's before the game even launches! The firm previously predicted that the bulk of preorders would come in the final week before release, with total prepurchases potentially hitting 25 million. If that happens, we're looking at over $2 billion in revenue before a single copy hits store shelves.
Platform-wise, the split is pretty lopsided: 74% of preorders so far are on PS5, compared to 26% on Xbox Series X|S. That's not a huge shock given the PS5's sales lead, but Xbox says it's very happy with its own GTA 6 preorder numbers.
Now, GTA 6 is a single-player game, but Rockstar is expected to eventually drop the next iteration of GTA Online, which will almost certainly be a massive moneymaker. For now, though, all eyes are on the launch: November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a PC version potentially following in early 2027.
So, what do you think? Are you surprised by these preorder numbers, or did you expect GTA 6 to dominate like this? Will you be picking it up on day one?
