Ever feel like you're asking for a feast and getting a breadcrumb? That's the vibe with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's latest update. The game just received Ver. 13.0.5, but it's not the exciting Switch 2 upgrade many were dreaming of.
According to Nintendo's support page, this patch fixes "behavior that occurs when invalid data is sent or received in online battles." What does that mean? Nobody's quite sure. Some Redditors are speculating it's targeting mods, but there's no official word. It's a far cry from the substantial updates other Switch 1 games are getting.
Take Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, for example. It just got a massive 4.0.0 update that adds Switch 2 features like 8-player split-screen, camera support, faster load times, and higher resolutions. Even Pikmin 3 Deluxe got a similar Switch 2 patch this week. Smash Ultimate? Crickets.
Fans have been hoping for something—anything—to make Smash Ultimate shine on Nintendo's new hardware. The wishlist is long: new characters, extra stages, crisper graphics, and that ever-elusive rollback netcode. But so far, the only Switch 2-related fix Ultimate received was back in June 2025, addressing a bug where online matches with Mii Fighters would crash if one player was on Switch 2.
Here's the reality check: Smash Ultimate's content train ended in 2021 when Sora from Kingdom Hearts joined the roster. Since then, the game's been in maintenance mode. And creator Masahiro Sakurai has moved on—his latest project, Kirby Air Riders, launched last November with no DLC planned. So maybe it's time to accept that a new Smash game is more likely than a major Ultimate update.
But hey, we can all agree Sakurai deserves a break after pouring his soul into this series. Still, it's tough for fans who just want their favorite brawler to feel fresh on Switch 2. What do you think—are you holding out hope for an Ultimate Switch 2 Edition, or are you ready for a brand-new Smash? Let us know!
