Did you ever think you'd see Zelda running on a PlayStation? Well, in 2026, that's exactly what's happening. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is now playable on the PS5 via emulation, and it's causing quite the stir online.
To be clear, this isn't an official release. You'll need a jailbroken PS5 to even think about it, much like how the game has been unofficially playable on Valve's Steam Deck for a while now. The emulated version, created by "premohq" on GitHub, can run at a stunning 4K resolution. One fan showcased the game on X, writing, "Zelda: Breath of the Wild running at 4K on PS5 is so damn beautiful," and attached a clip of Link running around in a red Nintendo Switch shirt. Yeah, the irony isn't lost on us.
But not everyone is impressed. The top comment on the post reads, "Looks better on the Switch 2 running at 60fps." Others chimed in, telling eager players to "just buy a Switch 2 and buy the game." For context, Breath of the Wild runs on the Switch 2 at 1440p (upscaled to 4K) and a solid 60 frames per second. So while the PS5 emulation might offer native 4K, it's not necessarily the definitive way to play.
Emulation has been a hot topic all year, especially on the PS5. Gamers first cracked the console back in 2022, and since then, various emulation projects have been popping up left and right. There's even talk that Demon's Souls and other massive Sony exclusives might make their way to PC unofficially. It's an exciting time for tinkerers, but also a risky one.
Nintendo is notoriously protective of its IP, so it wouldn't be surprising if they tried to strike down this Breath of the Wild project. After all, they've shut down fan projects before. For now, though, the emulation community is celebrating another milestone.
So, what do you think? Is 4K Zelda on PS5 a cool technical feat, or would you rather just play it on a Switch 2? Let us know in the comments!
