If you've been holding out hope for a new Nier game, we've got some rough news. At a recent game culture festival in Tokyo, series director Yoko Taro was asked point-blank whether a new Nier could happen. His answer? "Basically no."
And he didn't stop there. Taro went on to add, "I don't want to work anymore. I really don't want to do it." Blunt, sure, but honestly? That's just very Yoko Taro.
The conversation took place at a Tokyo game culture event, where Taro sat down for a chat with Keisuke Okabe, the director of Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist. The two talked shop, and naturally the topic of Nier's future came up. Taro's response left little room for interpretation.
For those who might not know, Taro is the mind behind Drakengard and the Nier series. Nier: Automata blew up worldwide after its release, turning 2B into one of gaming's most recognizable characters and cementing the series as a cult favorite with serious mainstream reach. But since then, the future of the franchise has stayed pretty murky.
To be fair, Taro is known for his deadpan, pessimistic humor, so you could read his comments as him being his usual self. Still, it's hard not to feel a little deflated if you were hoping for news about a sequel. This isn't exactly the first time the series' future has felt uncertain, but hearing it straight from the director definitely cools things down.
So for now, it looks like fans wanting more 2B will have to get their fix elsewhere. Whether that's through crossover appearances, merch, or just replaying Automata for the hundredth time, the wait for a proper new Nier continues.
What do you think? Is Taro just joking around like always, or should we really start accepting that Nier's story is done? Let us know in the comments.
