Did you catch the drama over GTA 6 pre-orders this week? The Verge dropped a report suggesting that early sales are "heavily skewed" toward PS5, which set off alarm bells for Xbox fans already worried about the platform's recent struggles.
But Xbox isn't staying quiet. Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball took to social media to push back, saying the company is "very happy" with how GTA 6 is performing on Xbox. In fact, he claims the title is "breaking records for XBOX." That's a bold statement, and it directly challenges the narrative that PlayStation is running away with this one.
The original report pointed to the pre-order split as another headache for Xbox, especially coming on the heels of layoffs earlier this week. It's been a rough stretch for the brand, and any suggestion that the biggest game of the year might underperform on their console is going to sting.
Still, Ball's response throws cold water on the idea that Xbox is worried. If GTA 6 really is setting records for the platform, that's a strong sign that players are still invested in what Xbox has to offer—even if the raw numbers lean toward Sony.
Of course, without official sales figures from Rockstar or Take-Two, it's hard to know exactly what's going on. Pre-order data can be tricky, and "skewed" doesn't necessarily mean Xbox is doing badly—it just means PlayStation might be doing even better. But records are records, and Xbox is clearly eager to remind everyone of that.
For now, the back-and-forth is a reminder of just how high the stakes are for GTA 6. Every scrap of sales data is going to be dissected, and both console makers will be watching closely. If you're planning to pick up the game, your choice of platform might feel like a bigger deal than ever.
So what do you think? Is Ball's response enough to quiet the concerns, or does the PS5 skew still worry you? Let us know in the comments.
