Did you hear? Cyberpunk 2077 is officially getting the live-action movie treatment. According to a Deadline report, Paramount Pictures is working with CD Projekt Red on a film set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached to the project. If that name sounds familiar, it should—his credits include a whole pile of Transformers movies, a couple of GI Joe flicks, and the 2005 Doom movie starring The Rock.
CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed the report on X, so this thing is real. That said, there's basically no other detail right now. No cast, no director, no release window. Just a confirmed project and a producer with a very specific résumé.
So instead of speculating about what we don't know, let's talk about something we do know: the perfect cyberpunk movie already exists, and it happens to star Johnny Silverhand himself. Keanu Reeves leads 1995's Johnny Mnemonic as a different guy named Johnny who's also having a rough time in the cyber-future. Based on a William Gibson short story, the film is set in the year 2021, which has, uh, already come and gone.
In the movie, Reeves plays a "mnemonic courier" who transports sensitive data inside his own head—he can carry nearly 80 gigs!—because the internet is an insecure digital goat rodeo full of scammers, grifters, and hackers. Honestly? The movie nailed that part. Johnny takes a high-risk, high-reward job, and it goes south almost immediately: he's hunted by the yakuza, betrayed by his handler, rescued by a sexy cyborg, gets his ass beat by a preacher, is saved by a dolphin, and ultimately destroys capitalism. Something like that, anyway.
The cast was absolutely stacked: Keanu Reeves, Dolph Lundgren, Ice-T, Ice-T's heroin-addicted dolphin, Dina Meyer, Udo Kier, Henry Rollins, Shannon Tweed's sister, Von Flores, Don Francks, and Takeshi Kitano. In 1995, that was a goddamn who's-who of people who were cool and not too expensive. The film wasn't particularly well received, but it did make money, and it's genuinely fun in a baffling way. The dolphin thing? No idea. Dolph Lundgren's whole deal? Also no idea. But you leave the theater thinking, "that was fun!"
There's no word on when the Cyberpunk 2077 film will hit screens, but that doesn't matter—you can watch Johnny Mnemonic right now on Netflix, Prime, Apple, Tubi, and probably other places too. The black-and-white director's cut on iTunes is reportedly the best way to watch. You might even find a DVD or VHS for 50 cents at a thrift shop. If you do, grab it.
So what do you think—are you hyped for a Cyberpunk 2077 movie, or are you just going to rewatch Johnny Mnemonic instead? Will you be picking this up when it eventually hits theaters?
