Warhammer: Blood Bowl Beta Impressions: Rumble Mode Steals the Show

The beta for Warhammer: Blood Bowl shows it's more of a 3.5 upgrade than a full sequel, but Rumble Mode, improved AI, and new rules make it a promising step up.

Warhammer: Blood Bowl Beta Impressions: Rumble Mode Steals the Show

Ever found yourself squeezing in "one more match" of Blood Bowl 3 at 11 PM, only to regret it when the clock hits midnight? You're not alone. The beta for Warhammer: Blood Bowl—the next iteration of the digital adaptation—addresses that exact pain point with a save-and-quit option against the AI. It's a small change, but a welcome one.

But the real star of the beta is Rumble Mode. Based on the tabletop Sevens format, it's a seven-a-side variant played on a smaller pitch. Each half lasts six turns instead of eight, and rerolls cost double, making failure more frequent—and since turnovers speed up play, matches fly by. Inspired by 40K in 40 Minutes and Rugby Sevens, Rumble Mode shakes up tactics: there's no line of scrimmage, so fragile teams aren't immediately down three players. The smaller pitch makes slow players less of a liability, and skills like Dodge become even more valuable. My Halfling team finally has a place to shine, especially with the Master Chef stealing rerolls.

Rumble Mode isn't identical to Sevens—it lacks Desperate Measures inducements and the veteran lineman rule—but it's playable from the first campaign chapter, which now defaults to it. The three beginner games as Ussingen Rookies are seven-a-side, making the second match against Chaos Chosen trickier. You can then choose Rumble or traditional matches for the rest of the campaign, and Rumble is available in Eternal League, competitions, friendlies, and basically everywhere. It'll be interesting to see how popular it becomes.

The AI also seems slightly improved. It still makes questionable blocks—like a skink taking on a mummy—but now picks the best block die when possible and occasionally attempts a pass instead of always caging. It sometimes risks a play before doing something safe, but hey, we've all been there.

Warhammer: Blood Bowl also incorporates the tabletop's third season rules. Stalling is punished by rock-throwing fans, while not stalling earns a 10k bonus. The new Secure the Ball action lets you pick up on a 2+ if you sacrifice the rest of that player's activation. Passing rules ditch Wildly Inaccurate results and deflections, encouraging actual ball play. MVP selection now only considers six nominated players (four in Rumble Mode), so benchwarmers don't soak up Star Player Points.

Other positives: a customizable landing page for quick access to modes or competitions, and a player advancement screen showing which skills others buy in similar situations, complete with percentages. No more alt-tabbing to check what the internet recommends.

The beta doesn't include the new Tomb Kings or Bretonnian teams, nor the shop or season pass, so monetization remains unclear. The public playtest starts October 7 on Steam, with full release by year's end. Will you be jumping into the beta? What do you think of Rumble Mode? Let us know in the comments!
