Did you notice anything clucking in CS2 after the September 22 update? Valve didn't say a word about it, but players have discovered a full-blown pet chicken system hidden inside the game. And yes, you can raise your own feathered friend.
Here's how it works. The eggs can show up in your weekly reward drops after you level up as a Prime player. But choosing an egg will eat up two of your weekly reward slots, meaning you'll have to give up the weapon cases, skins, or other items you could have grabbed that week. It's a tough trade-off, especially since eggs aren't tradable, can't be bought, and can't be obtained from other players. You either get one from your own weekly rewards or you don't. And not every player will see an egg each week.
Once you snag an egg, you'll see it in a nest in your menu character's area. According to Reddit players who've been tracking this, it takes about a week for the egg to hatch into a chick. Since the first eggs started appearing after the September 22 update, the earliest adopters are just now hitting that hatch timer. Feed also shows up in weekly rewards, so if you want your chick to keep growing, you'll need to decide whether to swap out other rewards for food.
As your chicken grows, you can name it or rename it. You get up to three naming chances: at hatching, during growth, and at adulthood. Once grown, your chicken can appear in your lobby, where you can take photos and interact with it. The whole process even leaves behind a kind of growth album record. Data miners have found different breeds like Catalana, Silkie, and Polish, plus dozens of color variations. Some deeper animations have been leaked through data mining, but it's unclear how to actually get them.
Interestingly, Valve's September 22 patch notes didn't mention the pet system at all. The main updates that day covered map selection flow, team tags, and C4 stickers. Then on September 23, the official update log added a fix: "Chickens now take damage from the Zeus x27." That's the only official nod so far. The discovery has sparked plenty of jokes, with some players dubbing the game "Chicken Strike 2."
For CS2 players, the weekly dilemma just got real: do you take the potentially market-valuable weapon case and skins, or dump two reward slots into raising a chicken you can't trade? It's a weirdly tough choice. And with multiple breeds and dozens of skins, there's a collectible angle that might tempt even the most hardcore fraggers.
What do you think? Will you be sacrificing your weekly rewards to raise a pet chicken in CS2? Let us know in the comments.
