Gears of War: E-Day Solves the Lancer Lore Problem—Here's How

Gears of War: E-Day had a big lore issue: the Lancer wasn't invented until after E-Day. The Coalition found a clever solution with a prototype, staying true to canon.

Gears of War: E-Day Solves the Lancer Lore Problem—Here's How

Remember the first time you saw the Lancer in Gears of War? That glorious hybrid of assault rifle and chainsaw? It's iconic, right? But here's the thing: in the game's lore, the Lancer wasn't supposed to exist during Emergence Day. So how do you give players their beloved weapon in a game set on that very day? That's the puzzle The Coalition had to crack for Gears of War: E-Day.

Their solution? A prototype. In the upcoming prequel, you'll get your hands on an early version of the Lancer, which fits perfectly into the timeline. Creative director Matt Searcy explained to GameSpot that they went out of their way to respect the canon, even lifting a scene from the Gears of War novels where Tai Kaliso uses a chainsaw in a grocery store to take down a Locust. "We just lift it and drop," he said, ensuring that every piece of dialogue and action from that moment is preserved in the game.

For those who've read the 2008 novel Gears of War: The Aspho Fields by Karen Traviss, this will sound familiar. That book is a major inspiration for E-Day, providing a rich backstory for Marcus and Dom's relationship, including the death of Dom's brother, Carlos. Searcy noted that the book gave them a "really rich jumping-off point" to explore where Marcus and Dom were before the world went to hell.

But here's the cool part: they didn't just slap a chainsaw on a rifle and call it a day. They had to connect the dots between the lore and the gameplay. "We have to have a Lancer in this game," Searcy said. "In the lore, it's created a year after E-Day by Marcus' father, so we find ways—like we revealed in our campaign preview where a prototype is built around E-Day—so we can feed into all of those things." It's a delicate balance, but they seem to have pulled it off.

Of course, the story is only half the battle. The multiplayer is where Gears truly shines, and E-Day promises overhauled movement systems that could make it the definitive prequel experience. Whether you're a lore junkie or a multiplayer die-hard, this one's shaping up to be a must-play.

So, are you ready to wield the original Lancer prototype? Will you be picking this up on October 6 for Xbox Series X|S and PC? Let us know your thoughts!
