Xbox's Physint Deal: Kojima Spy Game May Cost Under $200M

Xbox reportedly snagged Hideo Kojima's Physint for far less than expected, possibly under $200 million, after Sony dropped the project. The deal also covers film and TV adaptations.

Xbox's Physint Deal: Kojima Spy Game May Cost Under $200M

Ever wonder how much it costs to sign a legendary game creator? Apparently, Xbox got a steal on Hideo Kojima's new spy thriller, Physint. According to The New York Times, Xbox's agreement with Kojima was "substantially below what Xbox would typically spend to develop a premium game." That's a fancy way of saying they got a bargain.

So, what's the actual number? Well, that's where things get murky. Game budgets are notoriously secret, but rumors have swirled that Physint's budget at Sony was a whopping $400 million. However, that figure was never confirmed, and reporter Chris Dring, who originally floated the number, admitted he was just speculating. Now, Dring says he understands Xbox is paying "far, far less," possibly even below $200 million. Windows Central's Jez Corden backed that up, saying sources with direct knowledge of the contracts told him the real number is "far lower" and only a "fraction" of the reported figure.

Why did Sony walk away? Reports suggest the game was over budget and behind schedule, leading Sony to terminate the deal over a Zoom call. That left the door open for Xbox, under new CEO Asha Sharma, to swoop in. And it wasn't just for the game—the deal also includes film and TV adaptations. Not bad for a day's work.

Physint itself is shaping up to be something special. It stars Bill Skarsgard as the lead, alongside Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe. Kojima has said he believes Physint could become his most commercial game yet. The idea came from the overwhelming fan demand for another Metal Gear game. Since Kojima no longer works at Konami and can't make a new Metal Gear, he channeled that energy into a "new action espionage game"—and Physint was born.

But there's no release date or footage yet, so we'll have to wait to see how it turns out. In the meantime, Xbox is also publishing Kojima's horror game OD, so the partnership is clearly deepening. Sharma even touched on Xbox's relationship with PlayStation, saying the two companies currently work together and that will continue. "Competition and collaboration can coexist," she said.

With Kojima's previous Sony franchise, Death Stranding, reportedly barely breaking even, it's interesting to see Xbox taking a chance on his next big project. If Physint becomes a hit, Xbox could be looking at a major win—both in games and beyond. What do you think? Is Xbox making a smart bet, or is this a risky gamble? Let us know in the comments!
