Were you excited about the idea of playing GTA 6 on your PC through Xbox Cloud Gaming? Well, you might want to temper those expectations. Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball has set the record straight: GTA 6 won't be streaming on PC, and it won't be exclusive to Xbox streaming either.
The rumor mill started spinning earlier this week when The Verge reported that Xbox CEO Asha Sharma told employees during an all-hands meeting that the company had something special planned for GTA 6 that "no other platform holder is doing." Sources claimed this meant Xbox had secured exclusive streaming rights for GTA 6. That would have meant you'd need Xbox Cloud Gaming to stream the game, and more importantly, it could have opened the door for PC and mobile players to jump in via the cloud.
But Ball took to Twitter to clear things up. "While the excitement for GTA 6 and Xbox is great to see, it has also led to some misreporting," he wrote. "We are looking forward to launching GTA 6 on Xbox November 19, though the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC." So there you have it—no exclusive streaming, and no PC streaming. However, his wording does suggest the game will still be available to stream in some capacity, just not on the Xbox Cloud Streaming PC app.
Why the PC exclusion? It's a head-scratcher, especially since there's no native PC version of GTA 6 at launch. Rockstar Games has a history of going console-first, whether to perfect the PC version or because they know fans will double-dip when it eventually hits PC. That strategy might explain why they're holding back streaming on PC. After all, other cloud services like Amazon Luna and Nvidia GeForce Now don't have a console tied to them, so PC being left out isn't a given. Red Dead Redemption 2 did come to streaming, but that was via Stadia weeks after the PC release.
Timing is everything, though. Xbox's new game streaming limits—which cap you at 15 hours of playtime per month with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, with more hours available for purchase—also kick in this November, the same month GTA 6 launches. Given how long Rockstar titles tend to be, that's probably not a coincidence.
So, what does this mean for you? If you were hoping to stream GTA 6 on your PC, you'll need to look elsewhere or wait for a native PC version. But if you're on console, you're good to go when the game drops on November 19. Will you be picking it up on Xbox, or are you holding out for a PC release? Let us know in the comments!
