Did you ever think Minecraft would get a brand-new dimension? Well, it's finally happening. Mojang Studios dropped some massive news during the September Minecraft LIVE event, and it's the kind of announcement that makes you want to boot up the game right now.
First up: Minecraft is getting its fourth dimension. Called "The Sift," it's the first new dimension added to the game in over 14 years, joining the Overworld, Nether, and End. It'll be available on both Java and Bedrock editions. The Sift actually started as a concept for Minecraft Dungeons 2, the action-adventure game launching September 29, 2026. In Dungeons 2, players exploring interconnected worlds will encounter mysterious rifts scattered around, and stepping through them transports you to The Sift. Mojang describes it as a colorful world full of floating souls, featuring distinct areas like Meadow and Carapace. There's even a new enemy called the Twisted Warden. But how you'll actually enter The Sift in the main game, and how its world generation works, is still under wraps.
During the livestream, Mojang also showed off the first in-game development footage of The Sift in Minecraft proper. The brief clip revealed a water-blue sky, vibrant pink terrain, and a blue rabbit-like creature that appeared only for a moment. No name, no abilities, just pure mystery.
But that's not all. Before the dimension reveal, Mojang introduced the next update's headline feature: ice caves. This new underground biome joins the ranks of lush caves, dripstone caves, and the recently added sulfur caves. Inside, you'll find tons of ice and calcite, with dramatic lighting and misty fog creating a landscape that feels both majestic and a little unstable. Interestingly, lava can sometimes generate inside ice caves, giving you a bizarre ice-and-fire combo.
Mining gets a tweak too. Based on player feedback about ore distribution in sulfur caves, Mojang is adjusting how ores spawn in ice caves. Ores will cluster in patches of stone and deepslate, making it easier to spot them from terrain changes. Ice is quick to break, so you can dig through and explore fast. There's also a new Ice Crystal block that grows naturally on the cave floor and acts as a soft light source. You can harvest and place it wherever you want, or even walk on it. Icicles grow from ceilings too, and they're not just decorative. Use too many light sources like torches nearby, and the heat can cause them to collapse and drop on you. So maybe don't go torch-crazy down there.
And what's an ice cave without something nasty lurking inside? Enter the frozen zombie variant, an unnamed mob covered in snow and ice on its head, arms, and feet. When it hits you in melee, it applies a freezing effect that slows you down and deals extra damage over time. Some frozen zombies throw ice balls, and the damage scales with throwing speed, so closer throws hurt more. Defeat one carrying an ice ball, and you might get it as a drop. You can then brew a new Freezing Potion to slow down other players and deal ongoing damage.
The ice caves Game Drop doesn't have an official name or release date yet, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, Minecraft Dungeons 2 launches September 29, 2026, and The Sift debuts alongside it, shifting from the level-based structure of the first Dungeons to interconnected worlds.
What do you think about Minecraft's first new dimension in 14 years? Will you be diving into The Sift when it arrives in 2027?
