Gears of War: E-Day Patch Squashes Vomiting Frog Error

The Coalition's first Gears of War: E-Day patch fixes the 'Bilefrog-Kalona' error and other issues ahead of the game's October 6 worldwide launch.

Gears of War: E-Day Patch Squashes Vomiting Frog Error

Ever been vomited on by a giant frog? In Gears of War: E-Day, that's not just a gameplay hazard—it's also an error code. The Coalition has rolled out the game's first patch, and it tackles the wonderfully named "Bilefrog-Kalona" error, among other fixes.

If you've been playing in early access, you might have run into this one. The Bilefrog-Kalona error hits split-screen players who get automatically signed out of online services after their console or PC is suspended. When they try to hop back in via Quick Resume, boom—vomit-frogged. The patch, which is out now, addresses that specific issue.

But that's not all. The update focuses on overall stability and performance across the campaign, multiplayer, and Horde Siege modes. In Versus Social matches, some players were getting stuck in a waiting-lobby limbo, and certain Siege Blitz Secure objectives could fail to complete. Both are now fixed.

Campaign players will be happy to hear that several pesky problems across Act 2 are being patched. There were also game-wide issues with sticky turrets and unearned War Journal progress that have been resolved. For example, players joining an existing campaign could receive War Journal progress and Forge rewards earned before they joined—that's no longer the case.

The timing couldn't be better: Gears of War: E-Day launches worldwide on October 6 for PC and Xbox Series X|S, and a flood of Game Pass subscribers are expected to jump into Kalona starting tomorrow. While the story might not be the best Gears narrative, the game is still a big, dumb, and loud cover-based shooter that looks gorgeous on both platforms.

As GameSpot's Richard Wakeling put it in his campaign review, "For better or worse, E-Day is distinctly Gears, and I had a good time with it, even if the story is disappointing and the open areas are fairly dull." He added, "But that's all it is: a good game, propped up by combat that hasn't changed all that much over the past 20 years. That's enough to skate by, but I wish Gears of War would dig deeper."

So, whether you're a longtime Gears fan or a Game Pass newcomer, the first patch should make your experience smoother. Will you be picking up Gears of War: E-Day at launch? Let us know in the comments!
