The Last of Us Fans Defend Bella Ramsey: "She's Actually Beautiful"

The debate over Bella Ramsey's look as Ellie in HBO's The Last of Us just won't die down, and now fans are jumping in to defend her.

A fan took to social media to argue that the real problem isn't Ramsey at all — it's how the show styled her. "Bella is actually beautiful, it's just that the production completely failed to shape her look properly," they wrote. "And these comparisons always use her worst photos, which is really unfair."

That post struck a chord. Someone else pointed out that Ashley Johnson, who voiced and mo-capped Ellie in the games, "looks more like Ellie than the live-action casting does." Johnson's performance basically set the standard for who Ellie is in players' minds. But other fans were quick to note that Johnson doesn't actually look all that similar to game Ellie either — and the creators have said before that physical resemblance wasn't the priority when casting.

Defenders of Ramsey stress that a lot of the comparison images floating around are clearly cherry-picked — deliberately grabbing her worst angles or expressions from the show, then putting them next to a polished, idealized game model.

Ramsey herself has been pretty open about all this. In an interview, she admitted she used to be "really fixated on how Ellie looks in the game, especially the muscle definition in her arms." But showrunner Craig Mazin reassured her, telling her he wanted her to "look strong and feel strong, not chase a perfect physical match." As for the criticism, Ramsey said it "never bothered her" during filming, and she's proud that her version of Ellie "will live on on TV and online for a long time."
