Did you jump into Modern Warfare 4's campaign early? If so, you're part of a wave that's making serious noise on Steam. The game's story mode launched early for pre-order players in Taiwan on the 17th, and the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive—so positive that Steam concurrents topped 100,000 for two days straight.
On day one, the peak concurrent player count hit 84,000. That's not a huge number on its own, especially considering the rocky reputation of the previous entry, Modern Warfare 3. Fans were still burned by that game's story choices—like the dismissive death of key character Soap and Price going rogue after shooting General Shepherd. The backlash was real, and expectations were low.
But then streamers and creators started sharing the campaign, and the buzz exploded. Players are calling it one of the best Call of Duty stories in years, maybe ever. The narrative packs in everything fans love: battlefield camaraderie, twisty undercover-style turns, and even moments that force you into morally questionable actions. The result? A "Very Positive" rating on Steam—a rarity for recent Call of Duty titles.
That goodwill translated into more sales and more players. By the end of the 17th, SteamDB recorded a peak of 108,551 concurrent players, surpassing last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 peak of 100,332. And on the 18th, the game crossed the 100,000 mark again.
The early access period is split into two phases. The campaign is already live, and on the 21st, the reimagined DMZ mode opens up with its extraction-shooter gameplay. Whether this momentum carries into the full launch on the 25th—and beyond—will be a key story to watch.
So, are you diving into the campaign? What do you think of the story so far? Let us know!
