Did you ever play mancala as a kid, pushing shiny marbles around a wooden board? Well, that ancient game just got a roguelike makeover, and it's sitting on Steam right now.
It's called Oh!Ware, and it's a deckbuilder that launched on Steam about a week ago as of this writing. It's flying way under the radar so far, with just 23 reviews to its name. But what makes it interesting is what's underneath all the very 2026 roguelike trappings: mancala, the board game you probably haven't thought about in decades.
And when we say ancient, we mean ancient. Mancala may be the oldest board game in recorded history, though exactly when and where it was invented is still up for debate. Some historians point to archaeological evidence found in Jordan dating to around 6000 BC, which would make it somewhere between 1,500 and 7,000 years older than the games we usually compare it to. Other, more concrete evidence dug up by archaeologists is thousands of years newer, around 500-600 AD. So it's not definitively the oldest, with competition from ancient games like senet and mehen, but it's an OG no matter how you slice it.
In Oh!Ware, marbles stand in for cards, which raises a fair question: is it really a deckbuilder, or is it a bagbuilder? The roguelike structure and modern flourishes are all there, but the core is pure mancala. If you grew up playing it, you'll recognize the rhythm immediately. If you didn't, well, you might be in for a rough first run.
That was certainly the experience here. After booting up the demo and skipping the tutorial like a hotshot, it became very clear that 25 years away from mancala means you have no idea what you're doing. There was clicking, marbles moving around, some mana collecting, and a spider getting killed, which is strange because a spider has no business playing a board game that requires opposable thumbs.
Then came the classic pick-three upgrade screen, but with some genuinely funny choices: blessing marble, aggro marble, and so on. It's the kind of decision that makes you realize you need to go study up on mancala before your next run.
So here's the real question: if you jump into Oh!Ware, do you chase the aggro meta or the blessing meta? And more importantly, will you be picking this up? Let us know, because nobody wants to lose their marbles.
