Remember the first time you faced down Cthulhu with your friends around the table? If you missed out on Arkham Horror 2nd Edition, you're about to get another shot. Fantasy Flight Games is resurrecting the classic cooperative board game as Arkham Horror Remastered, and it's the first release in their new "Vault Series" – a line dedicated to bringing back beloved titles from their back catalog.
The original 2nd Edition has been out of print for years, and a rather different 3rd Edition has come and gone since then. But fans have been clamoring for the old version, and FFG heard you. "Arkham Horror 2nd Edition is a cornerstone of the industry that paved the way for many modern gaming experiences," says Wesley Mouri, FFG's brand ambassador. "It's a fan favorite that many people have affectionately called their first entrance into board gaming." That nostalgia, combined with demand from newer players, made it the perfect choice to kick off the Vault Series.
So what's new in Remastered? The core gameplay remains the same, but the team has focused on smoothing out the experience. Designer Dane Beltrami explains: "Many of the rules have been clarified either via wording or graphic design. Cards more clearly state what they do and require less upkeep/references to other rules." One big change: the Arkham Encounter Phase and Other World Encounter Phase are now combined into a single Encounter Phase. The goal is to keep you immersed in the action, not flipping through the rulebook.
Visuals have also gotten a facelift. Remastered adopts an art style similar to the popular Arkham Horror: The Card Game, unifying the look of the franchise. "We want every player, old or new, to feel fully immersed in this world," Beltrami says. As a taste of what's to come, FFG shared an exclusive piece of art with IGN: "Tulzscha - The Green Flame," a herald from the Kingsport expansion, reimagined by artist Peter Polach. The eerie green fire takes center stage, with cultists shielding themselves from its glow.
When the Gamefound campaign launches in just a few days, you'll have flexible pledge options. Want everything? There's a bundle with the base game and all expansions. Prefer to build your collection slowly? You can grab the base game and add individual expansions as add-ons. Specific prices and tiers will be revealed at launch.
For veteran investigators, this is a chance to complete your collection or relive the glory days. For newcomers, it's a smoother entry into the chaotic, Lovecraftian world of Arkham. Either way, the return of 2nd Edition is a big deal for board game fans. Will you be backing the campaign? Let us know in the comments!
