Did you hear that GTA 6 is officially eligible for The Game Awards? Rockstar is sneaking it in just one day before the deadline, which means the open-world crime epic is about to crash the party. But can it actually beat Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's record-breaking sweep from last year? Let's break it down.
First, a quick refresher: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 took home nine statues from 13 nominations. That's a massive haul and a benchmark most games can only dream of. GTA 6 could feasibly match those 13 nominations, making a tie possible, but I'll be honest—it's an uphill battle.
So where can we expect to see GTA 6? Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, sound, visuals, and performance are all fair game. That's seven categories right there. Games for Impact is also theoretically possible, since it champions releases with forward-thinking ideas at their core. Best Action and Best Action-Adventure are both possible, but I'd expect one or the other—likely pulling a Clair Obscur by getting one of these plus Game of the Year.
Obviously, Best Independent Game and Best Debut Indie Game are out. Clair Obscur managed to squeeze into those, but partnering with an entire city and its NBA team probably rules out Rockstar's sequel. That leaves Best Community Support, Innovation in Accessibility, and Players' Voice. The first depends on post-launch community support, the second is all about in-game features, and the third could see players rallying for it—even just for the meme.
On the community support front, GTA 6 faces stiff competition from Wardogs, Arc Raiders, and whatever other big live-service game you care to mention. Even Clair Obscur is in the mix, because anything that's been updated regularly is eligible. Baldur's Gate 3 took it last year, for instance. So yeah, I wouldn't count on GTA 6 tying Clair Obscur's record—but I wouldn't count out eating my lunch on that either. This is why I'm not a gambling man.
Anyway, Silent Hill: Townfall for Game of the Year, just for the Scottish representation. Not even Rockstar heads know everything that's in GTA 6 because devs will just add stuff—which is also how Red Dead Redemption 2 got its absurd horse testicle physics. What do you think—will GTA 6 sweep the awards, or will Clair Obscur's record stand?
