Resident Evil Requiem's Title Just Got More Confusing, Thanks to Producer

Producer Jun Takeuchi explains that 'Requiem' contains both an answer and a question, and hints at a future crossover between remakes and numbered titles.

Resident Evil Requiem's Title Just Got More Confusing, Thanks to Producer

Ever thought you had Resident Evil Requiem's title all figured out? Think again. Producer Jun Takeuchi just dropped an explanation that might leave even the most hardcore fans scratching their heads.

In the recently published Biohazard 30th Anniversary Special, Takeuchi explained that "Requiem" isn't just about the musical or religious meaning. "The spelling of Requiem (REQUIEM) contains not only the 'RE (response)' ... but also a 'Q (question),'" he said via GamesRadar. "In other words, this 'Requiem' presents both an 'answer' and a 'question.' I will explain the meaning of that at some point in the future." So, yeah, we're still in the dark—but at least we know there's a plan.

More intriguingly, Takeuchi revealed that the remake games and the numbered titles have been building toward a crossover since Resident Evil Village. "Currently, Resident Evil operates on a two-pronged approach: The numbered titles allow players to experience the ongoing drama of the series, while the remake series lets them experience the past," he added. "Eventually, the remake series will catch up to the era of the numbered titles, and the mechanisms for that are already being considered. In fact, preparations for this have been gradually underway since Resident Evil Village, including the appearance of names like Umbrella and Spencer, and the reappearance of Raccoon City in Requiem. This is all in preparation for a crossover."

What form that crossover will take—or when it might happen—remains a mystery. But Requiem already serves as a bridge between the two eras by putting classic hero Leon S. Kennedy in a co-leading role alongside new heroine Grace Ashcroft. That alone has fans speculating about how deep the connections will go.

As for what's officially next, the only confirmed Resident Evil game in development is Resident Evil Veronica, a remake of Resident Evil – Code: Veronica. No release date has been announced yet. Meanwhile, the Resident Evil movie directed by Zach Cregger has been a box office success, crossing $100 million domestically and $208.3 million worldwide.

So, what do you think? Is Takeuchi's cryptic explanation making you more excited for Requiem, or just more confused? And are you ready for a full-on crossover between the remakes and the main series? Let us know in the comments!
