Destiny 2 Vaulted Content Returns: What You'll Get and What You Won't

Remember when Bungie stripped a bunch of content from Destiny 2 and fans lost their minds? Well, good news: some of it is coming back. But don't expect everything you remember to make a grand return.

According to a new Forbes report, Bungie plans to freely unvault the campaigns, destinations, and raids that were controversially removed years ago. The studio originally argued that Destiny 2 had become too bloated and that old content confused new players. But day-one guardians were furious—they'd paid for those story missions, strikes, and raids, only to watch them vanish into the vault.

Now, following devastating job losses and the end of Destiny 2's live-service updates, Bungie is trying to stabilize. And that means bringing back the good stuff. The best part? You won't have to pay a dime. Since many players already bought this content or played it during the free-to-play era, Bungie reportedly has no plans to charge for its return. That's a relief.

But here's the catch: Destiny 2's 25+ seasons of additional content won't be coming back. Seasonal stuff was always designed to be temporary, so it wasn't "vaulted" in the traditional sense. Still, those seasons delivered key story beats and fun activities that now seem lost forever. If you were hoping for a Fortnite OG-style trip through Destiny's past seasons, you're out of luck.

Why the limits? Bungie's bandwidth is stretched thin. The studio is only slightly more than half its former headcount, and there's no sign Destiny 2 will return to full live-service mode. That also rules out holiday events like Festival of the Lost and The Dawning. Regular patches? Unlikely, beyond fixes for major game-breaking bugs. And don't hold your breath for the unfinished Shattered Cycle expansion or any all-new content.

Bungie head of product Josh Deane addressed the community in a video this week: "I wish we could just flip a freaking switch, but we're going to commit to unvaulting the Destiny 2 campaigns, the destinations, the raids that never should have been ripped away to begin with. They were an essential part of our journey together and definitely a place where we built memories with y'all."

It's not everything, but it's a start. Bungie has teased that this restoration is "the first step to lay the foundation for how we reforge into new stories and games that you all deserve."
