Xbox Disc-to-Digital Is Now Live for Everyone: Here's How It Works

Xbox Disc-to-Digital Is Now Live for Everyone: Here's How It Works

Ever wish you could turn your physical Xbox games into digital ones without buying them again? Well, Microsoft just made that dream a reality for everyone. After an initial rollout to Xbox Insiders, the Xbox disc-to-digital program is now officially available for all Xbox One and Xbox Series X users.

So how does it work? It's pretty simple. Just pop a supported physical Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S game into your console while you're signed in. You'll get a notification letting you know you've received a digital license for that game. And here's a cool bonus: you can use either an Xbox Series X or an Xbox One to claim licenses, even if you're exclusively claiming Xbox Series X games. That means you don't need the latest console to start building your digital library.

Now, here's a neat trick to speed things up: when you insert a disc, the game will automatically start installing. But you can turn that off by going to Settings > Profile & system > Devices & connections > Disc, and unchecking "Play disc automatically." This way, you can quickly claim licenses in bulk without waiting for installs. With a disc inserted using this method, you'll need to manually select the game card on the home screen, press the Menu button, and then claim the digital license. Once that's done, just eject the disc and move on to the next one. When you're finished, don't forget to re-check that "Play disc automatically" box for your next physical game.

Not all games are supported, though. If your license isn't available to claim, it's likely because the publisher hasn't opted into the program. Major companies like Square Enix and Ubisoft don't appear to support it yet, which could be a bummer if you're trying to digitize your entire collection. But for many other titles, you're good to go.

What about lending your games? Once you've claimed the digital license, you can still lend the physical disc to a friend. However, they'll then get the digital license. If they give the disc back to you and you re-insert it into your own system, you'll get the license back. So you're not losing ownership—it just moves with the disc.

This program is a big step for Xbox, making it easier than ever to go digital without abandoning your physical collection. Whether you're looking to declutter or just want the convenience of digital, it's worth checking out. Will you be digitizing your Xbox games? Let us know in the comments!
