Ever wondered how Blizzard managed to make Overwatch less toxic? The answer might surprise you: they dropped five heroes at once. For years, Overwatch had a reputation for toxic players, especially when a new hero arrived. But earlier this year, as part of Overwatch 2's rebuild, Blizzard released five heroes simultaneously alongside the game's first year-long story arc, The Reign of Talon. And it worked.
According to game director Aaron Keller, toxicity dropped measurably when those five heroes launched in Season 1. "People were like, 'how do you play all these heroes, what's this game, what's the meta going to be?'" Keller told GameSpot at BlizzCon. "We even saw toxicity went down measurably in the game when those five heroes went in, because people were just having fun trying to experience all of that." Instead of arguing, players were curious and experimenting.
But Blizzard isn't stopping there. This year, they're releasing a new hero every single season, giving players that same sense of discovery on a regular basis. "[The] start of this year, we had a big moment. We have these little ones over the course of the year, and then we're going to do it all again at the start of 2027," Keller explained. "And we're just going to like keep going that way in the future."
So what's next? Overwatch's next hero, Doctrine, was revealed during the BlizzCon opening ceremony. Described as a techno-vampire from Zimbabwe who wields a scepter, Doctrine can heal players, buff them, and unleash a swarm of bat drones to push back enemies. That's a pretty unique kit, and it'll be interesting to see how it shakes up the meta.

But for now, it seems Blizzard's strategy of flooding the game with new content is paying off in more ways than one.
