Ever wonder how a game evolves once a whole team gets their hands on it? That's exactly what's happening with Cyberpunk 2, according to game director Gabe Amatangelo.
In a new blog post, Amatangelo opened up about the sequel and how his original vision is shifting as CD Projekt Red assigns more people to the project. He said, "I had the idea of Cyberpunk 2 in the beginning, but it evolves as I involve more people. And it evolves as I empower the team and individuals within them to contribute. It becomes something else, right? It becomes this thing that I've shepherded, but it's ultimately a reflection of the team's hearts and souls. And I look forward to sharing that."
That's a pretty cool way to look at game development, right? Amatangelo also touched on what the cyberpunk theme means to him, saying he wanted to explore ideas of dehumanization. With more minds contributing, the game is becoming a true team effort.
But it's not just about the game. Amatangelo shared why he cares so deeply about the medium: "Video games impacted my life. They opened my mind, and got me motivated and excited. And I want to make sure that doesn't go away for this generation or the next." That's a mission we can all get behind.
So when will Cyberpunk 2 drop? No clue yet. It's just one of several big projects at CD Projekt Red, which also plans to release a whole trilogy of Witcher games within a six-year period, starting with The Witcher 4. And after the rocky launch of Cyberpunk 2077, the studio is surely aiming to avoid a repeat of that debacle.
Speaking of Cyberpunk 2077, it's in a much better place now. After a rough start, the game got tons of free post-launch support and a critically acclaimed expansion, Phantom Liberty. It's still a best-seller, especially when discounted, and with season two of the spin-off anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners launching on October 20, interest is bound to spike again. Plus, Paramount has announced a Cyberpunk 2077 movie.
So while we wait for Cyberpunk 2, there's plenty to keep us busy in Night City. What do you think about Amatangelo's approach to the sequel? Will you be picking up Cyberpunk 2077 again when Edgerunners season two hits?
