Viral AI Game Mashup Launcher Melty Raises Privacy Red Flags

A new Windows launcher called Melty lets you play AI-generated mashups of games like Elden Ring and Minecraft, but its terms and hidden data collection are cause for concern.

Viral AI Game Mashup Launcher Melty Raises Privacy Red Flags

Have you seen those wild AI mashups of Elden Ring and Minecraft floating around lately? You know the ones—Skyrim's world with FromSoftware combat, or whatever bizarre combo the internet dreams up. Well, someone's gone and made a launcher that supposedly lets you play any mashup you want. It's called Melty, and it's for Windows. But before you rush to download it, there are some serious red flags you should know about.

According to its official description, "Melty is a free mashup launcher for Windows that joins two games you own into one hybrid experience. Instead of installing mods by hand, you press Play once: Melty downloads the mashup, sets up everything the combination needs, and launches the merged game." Sounds convenient, right? The catch is that its terms of service are incredibly broad—they let the launcher do just about everything on your PC.

We're talking about authorization to find games, download new tools, copy files, modify folders, run programs, and execute automatic updates. That's a lot of power to hand over to an unknown app. And it gets worse. A coder who goes by "Wubbity" online claims he pulled apart the Melty installer (version 1.0.33) and found that it's actually a rebrand of LookLoot, an app that records gameplay video and inputs as AI training data.

Wubbity says the recording system ships inside Melty, but the privacy policy doesn't mention it. He clarifies it's "not malware, no password stealing," but it is "shipping a dormant gameplay-recording pipeline its website can trigger, and users weren't told." In other words, you could be unknowingly feeding your gameplay to AI training. That's a big yikes.

Given all this, I'd strongly recommend giving Melty a miss. It's not just this launcher, either—the Bloodborne PC port similarly relies on AI, and it feels like controversial tech is popping up everywhere. Even reputable companies like Epic Games are transforming their launchers and proudly announcing they've "vibe coded" them. At least we still have Valve's ever-legendary Steam to lean on. In fact, Valve beat Epic to the punch, updating the Steam launcher just one day before its rival claimed to be "faster" thanks to AI-powered vibe coding.

So, what do you think? Will you be steering clear of Melty and other AI-powered tools, or are you curious enough to give them a shot? Let us know in the comments!
