Remember when everyone said Uwe Boll made the worst video game movies ever? Well, he's got a message for you: don't ever bash his movies again. The infamous director took to Twitter to share a negative review of the new Street Fighter movie, writing, "Don’t ever bash my movies again." Ouch.
So, how bad is the new Street Fighter? It debuted to mixed first reactions, but official reviews have been less than kind. It opened at 41% on Rotten Tomatoes and has since crawled up to 45%. Our own review gave it 2.5 out of 5 stars, calling it "an overstuffed miss: a hyper-edited, dick-joke-filled, tonally inconsistent movie that ends halfway through its own story. But rather than leaving you wanting more, you're left with a headache."
Directed by Kitao Sakurai, Street Fighter reunites Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) as they're recruited by Chun-Li (Callina Liang) to compete in the next World Warrior Tournament. The cast also includes Jason Momoa and 50 Cent, plus WWE fighters Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns. Sounds like a wild ride, but not necessarily in a good way.
Boll, of course, is best known for directing such classics as 2003's House of the Dead (3% on Rotten Tomatoes), 2005's Alone in the Dark (1%), its 2008 direct-to-video sequel, 2007's Postal (9%), and 2008's Far Cry (no rating). So when he says his movies weren't that bad, he's got a point—compared to a 45% score, anyway.
The Street Fighter flop has certainly caused a kink in the video game movie trend, harkening back to the old days when Boll's movies came during a lull in the genre. But the trend isn't dying out yet. Just last month, Zach Cregger's Resident Evil smashed box office expectations, becoming one of the best video game movies of all time.
Street Fighter is out in theaters now. Will you be seeing it, or are you siding with Uwe Boll on this one? Let us know in the comments!
