Can you imagine spending years crafting a blockbuster game, only to worry you won't be around to celebrate its launch? That's the grim reality reportedly facing developers at The Coalition, the studio behind Gears of War: E-Day. With the game just days away, staff are said to be anxious about layoffs and withheld bonuses, according to a Eurogamer report.
Since July, Microsoft's gaming division has been hit by massive restructuring, with Xbox CEO Asha Sharma confirming 3,200 jobs will be cut. Studios like Halo Studios, Obsidian, Bethesda, and Ninja Theory have already felt the pain. Now, The Coalition—long considered one of Microsoft's "good children"—fears it's next. The recent layoff of story director Juan Vaca, among others, has shattered the sense of safety.
One source described the heartbreak: "I can only imagine the heartbreak of spending all those years on a game to have the final stretch ripped away, completely out of your control. It's like you planned for a year on a meal for your family where everyone will be there and the day of, you get locked out of the building or something and can't join in."
Despite the crunch period, developers feel powerless. "We honestly expected the layoffs to hit us post-release, but that seems to not matter now," one said. "Now we're just expecting the next wave, or being reorganized under Activision or something later this year." There's also fear that those laid off now would miss out on bonuses tied to the game's critical performance. "It's hard to believe anything [Microsoft leadership] say anymore after discarding staff in this manner," another added, with a third saying they "wouldn't put it past" the company to withhold those payouts.
On a brighter note, Gears of War: E-Day has debuted to a Metacritic score of 87, and The Coalition has plans for five seasons of post-launch updates, including celebrating the franchise's 20th anniversary in November. The devs want to be known for "all the things that made Gears resonate in the first place," without "looking outside at other franchises."
But with layoffs looming, the mood is far from celebratory. As one developer put it, all anyone can do is wait and see what happens in the coming weeks. It's a sobering reminder of the instability even in AAA game development.
