Ever wondered why Sony is ditching PS5 discs in 2028? Ken Kutaragi, the man known as the 'Father of PlayStation,' has some thoughts.
Speaking to VGC, Kutaragi said he gets why people are upset. When you buy a game physically, you feel like you own it. But he pointed out that nobody expects physical media for a smartphone because we trust we'll keep our content. He really does understand the frustration, especially since Sony still sells millions of physical games each year, and in some regions, over 50% of new PS5 games are bought on disc.
Still, Kutaragi thinks the shift to digital is inevitable. 'I don't think it's economically reasonable [to continue to support discs],' he said. 'Maybe it's a mentality issue.' Sony has called ending disc support a 'natural direction' as it follows consumer trends. One expert even suggests it's really about profitability and control.
Kutaragi also noted that PlayStation's teams now include people from outside the traditional gaming world, like those from streaming companies after Sony bought Gaikai. These new hires might see PlayStation as 'not just a game console, but also a content terminal.' That mindset could clash with longtime game enthusiasts.
While Sony is moving away from discs, Nintendo isn't ready to give up on physical games yet. Microsoft hasn't said what it'll do, but many expect Xbox to follow suit eventually.
So, what do you think? Are you ready for an all-digital future, or will you miss your game discs?
