Did you think CD Projekt Red was done with Cyberpunk 2077? Think again. The studio has just confirmed that a brand-new update, patch 2.5, is dropping later this week on October 22, and it's bringing content inspired by the freshly released Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 anime.
If you've been following Cyberpunk 2077's redemption arc, this won't come as a huge shock. The game famously launched in rough shape, but CD Projekt Red has pulled a No Man's Sky-style turnaround, turning it into one of the most beloved titles out there. A big part of that has been the steady stream of free updates, and one of the biggest was the original Edgerunners update, which added new weapons, gear, and gigs. Four years later, they're repeating the trick.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, the new Studio Trigger Netflix anime series, dropped today. It features a brand-new cast of characters and tells an entirely new story in Night City. Since the original in-game Edgerunners content doesn't apply to the new cast, CD Projekt Red is cooking up something fresh. The studio announced the update on Twitter with new key art showing V standing alongside one of Edgerunners 2's quartet of protagonists, Weak Kingsley, amid a shootout.
So, what can you expect from patch 2.5? Details are still scarce, but the official Cyberpunk website has dropped two juicy tidbits: "cyberware customization" and "a new dual-wielding playstyle" are coming to the game. That's already got our minds racing with build possibilities. And if the first Edgerunners update is anything to go by, we'd bet on some new gigs or at least cosmetics based on the new anime's leading characters.
For those hungry for more info, CD Projekt Red has confirmed a new episode of REDstreams airing tomorrow, October 21, at 5pm CEST (4pm BST | 11am ET | 8am PT). That's where we'll likely get the full rundown on everything included in update 2.5.
It's wild to think how far Cyberpunk 2077 has come. From disaster to darling, and now it's getting cross-media synergy with the anime. Whether you're a longtime player or someone who jumped in after the Edgerunners hype, this update looks like another good reason to dive back into Night City.
What do you think? Are you excited for the Edgerunners 2 content, or were you hoping for something else? Will you be picking this up? Let us know in the comments!
