Ever fired up a game expecting an epic adventure, only to get emotionally wrecked in the first 15 minutes? That's exactly what happened to rapper T-Pain when he booted up Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 on his Nappy Boy Gaming YouTube channel.
During the stream, T-Pain played through the game's prologue, which includes the tragic death of Sophie. The moment left him speechless for a few seconds as he resumed control of Gustave. Eventually, he let out an exasperated "shewwww" sound and exited to desktop. An offscreen person asked if the story was sad, and T-Pain confirmed it was. When asked if it was too sad, he laughed and said, "Yeah, it was too sad."
But the real kicker came when he read a comment warning him that "it gets worse." Anyone who's played the game knows that's absolutely true. T-Pain's response? A firm "Absolutely not." And just like that, he was done.
Honestly, you can't blame him. Sometimes you just want to play a game without feeling like you need to text your therapist afterward. The opening of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is notoriously heavy, and if you're not in the mood for a relentless downer, it can be a lot to handle.
That said, there's something to be said for stories that hit that hard. If a game's writing and performances are good enough to make you feel such intense emotion, it's probably worth seeing through—even if it never gives you the emotional upswing you're hoping for. Think of The Last of Us: it's beloved precisely because it offers an uncompromising, realistic look at two people trying to survive a zombie apocalypse. Bad things happen to good people, and not everyone gets a perfect redemption arc.
Casting aside traditional hero and villain trajectories makes for a more believable, absorbing story. You might not be dancing around the room afterward, but you can always balance things out with something lighter. After all, Elden Ring and Dark Souls inspired Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 director's approach to the RPG's story—he didn't want to spoon-feed players.
So, what do you think? Would you push through the sadness, or would you nope out like T-Pain? Let us know in the comments!
