Ever waited over a decade for a new entry in your favorite series? Castlevania fans know that pain all too well. The last proper console game, Lords of Shadow 2, dropped 12 years ago, and the wait for a true follow-up has felt endless. But according to the producer of the upcoming Castlevania: Belmont's Curse, you won't be twiddling your thumbs for another decade.
In an interview with Famitsu (translated by Nintendo Everything), producer Tsutomu Taniguchi was asked about the future of the series, especially since Belmont's Curse arrives around the 40th anniversary of the original Castlevania. He made it clear that the team is fully focused on the current game, but also acknowledged the importance of keeping momentum. "If we said, 'Okay, the next game will be out in ten years', the whole thing is meaningless," Taniguchi said. He admitted he doesn't yet know what shape a future game might take, but the message is clear: Konami doesn't want another lost decade.
So why did Belmont's Curse happen now? Taniguchi explained that development started from "a sense of urgency." He noted that while the number of people actually playing Castlevania has declined, the number of people who have heard of it but never played has risen. That's likely thanks to the hit Netflix animated series, which introduced the franchise to a whole new audience. Belmont's Curse ties into that universe: Rose Belmont is the daughter of Trevor and Sypha from Castlevania 3, the stars of the original Netflix show.
That crossover appeal could be key to reviving the series. Konami has already said Belmont's Curse won't be the end, and Taniguchi's comments suggest they're thinking about what comes next—even if they're not ready to announce it. For fans, it's a relief to hear that the publisher isn't content to let the franchise languish again.
Of course, we still don't know what a new Castlevania would look like. Would it be another Metroidvania-style adventure, a 3D entry, or something else entirely? The article's author muses about a new 3D game or a Devil May Cry-style action title, but that's just wishful thinking for now. What we do know is that Konami is aware of the demand and doesn't want to squander it.
With Belmont's Curse on the horizon, the big question is whether it can bring lapsed fans back and attract newcomers. If it succeeds, the series could finally get the revival it deserves. And if Taniguchi has his way, you won't have to wait until 2035 to play the next chapter.
