Sydney Sweeney's rise in Hollywood isn't just good news for her — it's apparently great news for the Sony exec who helped make it happen. Columbia Pictures has announced that Maia Eyre, previously Senior Vice President of Creative Development, has been promoted to Executive Vice President of Creative Development. She'll stay at Sony Pictures' Culver City headquarters and now reports to Peter Kang, President of Production at Columbia Pictures.
So why the glow-up? Eyre has quietly been one of the driving forces behind several of Sony's buzziest projects. Her biggest recent win was helping broker the studio's partnership with Sydney Sweeney and her production company, Honey Trap. That deal was officially announced back in June, and Eyre is now overseeing development on Hollow, a fresh take on the classic Sleepy Hollow legend starring Sweeney alongside Belmont Cameli.
But Eyre's fingerprints are on more than just Sweeney's slate. She also helped push Anyone But You, the rom-com starring Sweeney and Glen Powell, which pulled in $214 million worldwide. That's a serious number for a romantic comedy these days, and it's become one of Sony's standout commercial wins in the genre in recent years.
Up next on her plate is an adaptation of the bestselling YA novel Fake Skating. The project is being produced with Oliver Bridge's company, and the cast is already locked in with Amelie Hoeferle and Graham Campbell set to star. It marks the first time a Lynn Painter book has been adapted for the big screen, and it's currently slated to hit theaters next summer.
Eyre also had a hand in getting Anaconda made — the comedy starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd — which earned $135 million worldwide last year. Not bad for a resume that keeps growing.
Her path to this promotion is a pretty classic Hollywood climb. Eyre is originally from Canada and moved to Los Angeles back in 2013 to study in UCLA's MFA film producing program. After graduating, she got her foot in the door at Sony through a TriStar Pictures internship and steadily worked her way up into a key development role.
The promotion signals that Sony is betting big on her eye for projects and her sense of what sells. Given the hits tied to her name, it's easy to see why.
What do you think — is Anyone But You proof the rom-com is officially back? And are you curious about that Sleepy Hollow reimagining? Let us know in the comments.
