Nintendo might be cooking up something special for Switch Online subscribers, and dataminers just caught a whiff of it.
A brand-new "event gift" system has been discovered buried in the code for Nintendo Switch Online, the service that covers both Switch and Switch 2. It hasn't been announced anywhere, which makes the find all the more intriguing.
So what exactly did the code sleuths dig up? For starters, there's a fresh domain whose whole job appears to be receiving gifts. Alongside it, they found a loading animation featuring a gift box icon, plus a roughly two-second sound effect for when a gift gets received. That's a pretty clear signal something is being built here.
And it sounds like more than just a simple redeem button. Based on how the code is structured, the system can juggle multiple gift events at once, with each event carrying its own video and thumbnail content. In other words, it looks like a small in-app showcase for events rather than a one-off feature.
Since the domain includes an "NSO" tag, the popular theory is that these gifts will tie directly into Switch Online subscriptions. Nintendo has pulled similar stunts before. It handed out limited icons through events like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and earlier this year the DK Challenge let players unlock digital collectible cards by completing tasks. So the community's leading guess is that Nintendo wants to make this "event plus reward" formula a regular thing and stretch it across more game themes.
As for what players actually want? Switch 2 console themes and game-specific goodies top the wishlist, with classics like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time frequently coming up in those conversations. Nintendo itself has stayed completely silent on the discovery, so when this system goes live and what it'll hand out remain total mysteries.
For now, it's a waiting game. But if you're a Switch Online subscriber, this is one to keep an eye on. What kind of gift would actually make you excited to log in? Drop your dream reward below.
