Minecraft's Next Drop: Ice Caves, Frozen Zombies & More

What if the next time you dig into a snowy biome, the ground beneath you turns into a glittering, dangerous ice cavern? That's exactly what Minecraft has in store.

During Minecraft Live on September 26, Mojang pulled back the curtain on the game's next drop. It's bringing a brand-new underground environment, a frosty new hostile mob, and a bunch of ice-themed toys to mess around with. Following the usual once-per-quarter cadence, the drop is expected to land in December 2026 — and it doesn't have a name yet.

The headline addition is ice caves. Think of them as a rare underground extension of Minecraft's existing cold biomes, adding a whole new layer of variety when you're poking around snowy regions. They give you one more reason to grab a pickaxe and head below the surface instead of just wandering the tundra.

Inside, you'll find ice crystals. These can be collected and used for decoration, and they're surprisingly flexible — place them vertically or horizontally, and they'll light up your builds too. That makes them a handy new lighting option for anyone who likes their bases looking a little cooler (literally).

But ice caves aren't a peaceful sightseeing trip. A new hostile mob called the Frozen Zombie lurks down there, and it comes with fresh combat mechanics. Its melee attacks apply a stacking freezing effect — take too many hits and you'll eventually freeze solid, which makes getting swarmed by a group especially scary. If that wasn't enough, Frozen Zombies can also hurl ice balls that deal damage and knock you back, applying the Frozen effect on impact.

So how do you make one? Expose a regular Zombie to powdered snow and you've got yourself a Frozen Zombie. Fortunately, killing one drops ice balls. And if you're not running into any, you can craft ice balls yourself. You can use them as weapons to damage and knock enemies back, just like what happens to you. They also brew a new potion that applies a freezing effect.

Once this drop arrives around late December 2026, there's more on the horizon: Mojang also announced that the first new Minecraft dimension in 15 years is coming in 2027. That's a pretty wild one-two punch for the game.
