Ever wondered what Night City would look like in live action? Well, it might be closer than you think. Paramount Pictures is reportedly working with CD Projekt Red on a live-action movie set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, and the news just got official backing from the top.
CDPR co-CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed the project on X, saying the studio is "excited about Paramount as a future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise." He also teased that more details will be shared "at the appropriate time." That's about as official as it gets without a full press release.
According to Deadline, veteran producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached to produce alongside CDPR. If his name rings a bell, it should. He's been behind multiple Transformers and G.I. Joe films, plus the 2005 Doom movie starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. So he's no stranger to big-screen adaptations of games and toys.
But before you start fancasting V and Johnny Silverhand, pump the brakes. The movie is only confirmed to use the Cyberpunk 2077 setting, not necessarily the game's story. That means V, Johnny, and the whole chip-heist plot might not even appear. No director, cast, plot, or release date has been announced yet, so there's a lot still up in the air.
For those who haven't played, Cyberpunk 2077 takes place in the dystopian metropolis of Night City. You play as V, a mercenary who takes on a job with your buddy Jackie to steal a prototype chip from the Arasaka Corporation. When things go sideways, the digital personality of Night City legend Johnny Silverhand ends up in your head, slowly overwriting your consciousness. The rest of the game is a race to survive and find a way to remove the chip.
The franchise has been a massive success for CDPR. Cyberpunk 2077 has sold over 40 million copies worldwide, and its expansion, Phantom Liberty, has moved 15 million units. That's a huge audience, and Paramount is clearly looking to tap into it.
Paramount has been busy with game adaptations lately. They're co-producing a live-action Street Fighter movie with Legendary Pictures, set to hit theaters on October 16, and there's also a Call of Duty movie in the works. So this Cyberpunk project fits right into their current strategy.
Will the movie follow V's story or go in a completely different direction? And who would you want to see in the lead role? Let us know in the comments!
