Remember RuneScape Reignited? If you blinked, you might have missed it — because Jagex has already pulled the plug. Less than two weeks after announcing the fresh-start servers, the studio has cancelled the whole thing. Talk about a speedrun.
For those who missed the drama: Reignited was pitched as a way for new and lapsed players to restart their adventures from scratch on separate, unique servers. Sounds nice on paper, right? But trouble kicked off almost immediately. Players raised concerns about a potential community split, restrictions on character interactions, and the need to pay for a separate subscription just to access the new servers.
Jagex didn't ignore the noise. Just days after the initial announcement, the studio apologized for making veteran players feel like they were being shunted aside, saying it was "exploring a heavy set of revisions to Reignited based on your feedback." A few days later, it laid out a more specific list of intended changes and asked for even more feedback. But after all that input came in, Jagex decided the writing was on the wall.
"It is clear that we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it," said Mod Ryan — associate creative director Ryan Philpott — in a blog post announcing the cancellation. He added that the goal is to see RuneScape grow again with returning and new players, "but never at the expense of our existing community." Fair enough.
If this feels familiar, that's because it is. Jagex has form here. In 2023, the studio dropped a new RuneScape battle pass after massive player backlash. In 2025, it scrapped "Treasure Hunter" microtransactions, which CEO Jon Bellamy framed as "part of a wider transformation across Jagex" focused on "deeper value, greater fairness and long-term improvements for players." It hasn't all been smooth sailing — recent price hikes went down about as well as you'd expect, and the studio's decision to scrap in-game Pride Month events was allowed to stand despite players absolutely mauling it. But when it comes to gameplay, Jagex has shown it'll react fast when it's blown things badly enough. And this definitely qualifies.
So what's next? Despite the cancellation, Philpott invited new and returning players to jump in with a 10 day free trial beginning on December 2, offering full access to all worlds and content. The 2027 roadmap for RuneScape also remains in place. "The future of RuneScape is still extremely bright," Philpott concluded. "RuneScape will always be built for and defined by its community. So please keep letting us know when you feel we're getting it wrong and shout with that same energy when you think we're getting it right too."
Will you be diving into that free trial on December 2, or are you still side-eyeing Jagex after this whole saga? What do you think?
