Marvel's Blade has had a rough ride, and now the director who walked away is finally talking about it.

Bassam Tariq, who was once attached to helm the film, opened up to IGN about leaving the project — and admitted he felt like a "failure" at the time. Yeah, that stings just reading it.

According to Tariq, the writing was on the wall early. He says he "wasn't allowed to write the script," which ultimately pushed him to step away. His reasoning is pretty blunt: "Life is too short to make something that's genuinely disastrous." Honestly? Hard to argue with that.

So what could Blade have looked like under Tariq? He shared some details about the version he had in mind, and it sounds like a wild ride. The story was set in the 1920s, featuring carefully designed New Orleans locations and an action sequence that kicks off in a speakeasy before escalating into a full-on horseback chase. A speakeasy-to-horse-chase transition is exactly the kind of weird, stylish swing that makes you wonder what could have been.

Despite all the turbulence, Tariq isn't pointing fingers at Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. He calls Feige a "very good person" and believes he's good at listening and adjusting course when needed — though Tariq acknowledges the final call was always Feige's to make. No drama, just reality.

Tariq also noted that Blade comes with enormous pressure baked in. Wesley Snipes' take on the character is iconic, and any new version has a steep hill to climb trying to compete with that legacy. That's not an easy shadow to step out of.

For those keeping score: Mahershala Ali was officially announced as Blade back in 2019, but the project ran into delay after delay and multiple creative shakeups before finally being canceled in July 2026.

It's a bummer of a saga for a character who deserves better. What do you think — was Blade doomed from the start, or would Tariq's 1920s version have been something special? Drop your thoughts below.
