Ever felt like a game company just wasn't listening to you? RuneScape fans sure did—and this time, Jagex actually heard them. The developer has canceled RuneScape Reignited, the controversial plan to soft-reset the MMO with forked servers, fresh economies, and brand-new characters. After a wave of player backlash, the project is officially dead.
In a blog post, associate creative director Mod Ryan didn't mince words: "It is clear that we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it." He added that the goal is to see RuneScape grow again—with returning and new players—but "never at the expense of our existing community." That's a pretty big admission from a studio that just recently apologized for neglecting players.
So why did Reignited spark so much anger? The main complaint, as Jagex itself acknowledged, was that veterans who've kept RuneScape alive for years would have to leave their accounts behind to enjoy the fresh servers—servers untainted by the microtransaction sludge Jagex has been trying to scrub out. It was pitched as a glorious refresh, but longtime players felt left behind and worried it would split an already small audience. On top of that, you'd need yet another membership subscription for a new account, since RuneScape subs don't cover multiple characters like World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy 14 do.
Mod Ryan also referenced a painful history lesson: the Evolution of Combat (EOC) update from November 2012. That update dramatically changed the game's core, adding a more WoW-like skill system that caused many players to quit overnight. It ultimately split RuneScape into two games—Old School RuneScape and what's now RuneScape 3. "It has taken us over a decade to recover from that," Mod Ryan said. He noted that the last time Jagex didn't listen to feedback, combat changed forever. Not wanting a repeat, the team pulled the plug on Reignited.
But it's not all bad news. Mod Ryan still believes December is a great time to jump into RuneScape. The previously announced 10-day free trial will run from December 2nd to December 12th. New characters, or any character that hasn't been in membership since June 2nd, can freely access Members worlds and content during that period. The rest of the RuneScape 2027 roadmap—which Mod Ryan worried was overshadowed by the Reignited blowback—remains untouched. And yes, RuneScape 4 was just announced, so there's plenty on the horizon.
The early response to the cancellation has been mostly positive, though not universally so. Some players are disappointed to miss out on a fresh day-one boom, but crowds of veterans have praised Jagex for listening and acting quickly. Since new CEO Jon Bellamy took the helm, the studio has been loudly pushing to clean up RuneScape and bring it closer to the popularity of Old School RuneScape, which attracts far more players. As Mod Ryan put it: "RuneScape will always be built for and defined by its community."
So, what do you think? Were you looking forward to Reignited, or are you glad Jagex hit the brakes? Will you be jumping into that December free trial? Let us know in the comments!
