Remember when you first heard about Squadron 42, the single-player game set in the Star Citizen universe? It was supposed to be the polished, story-driven experience that would tide us over while the MMO side of things kept getting delayed. Well, guess what? It's been delayed again, this time to 2027. Shocking, right? Absolutely no one saw this coming.
If you're a long-time follower of Star Citizen's development, you know the drill by now. Squadron 42 has been in development for what feels like an eternity, and every year we get a new release window that slips further into the future. Back in 2020, it was supposed to come out in 2023. Then it moved to 2024, then 2026, and now, according to the latest update, it's slated for 2027. That's a whole seven years from now if you're counting.
For those of us who just want to play a solid single-player space sim, this is a tough pill to swallow. The game has been touted as a cinematic, star-studded adventure with a cast that includes Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, and Gillian Anderson, among others. It was supposed to be the reason to care about the Star Citizen universe even if you didn't want to dive into the MMO. But at this rate, we might see Half-Life 3 before we see Squadron 42.
The delay is blamed on the usual suspects: the need for more polish, the complexity of the game's tech, and the team's focus on making sure it meets the high expectations of its backers. But let's be honest, the Star Citizen community has been waiting for so long that 'high expectations' might be an understatement. Some have even joked that the game will release alongside the next generation of consoles.
This news comes on the heels of a year where Star Citizen itself has seen plenty of ups and downs, from server issues to new ship sales that keep the money flowing in. And while the MMO continues to grow in scope, the single-player campaign remains a distant dream for many. It's a bit like waiting for that one friend who always says they're on their way, but they're still 30 minutes out.
But hey, we're not here to rage or throw our keyboards. We're just here to report the facts and share a collective sigh. If you're a backer or a hopeful player, this delay is just another chapter in the long, winding saga of Star Citizen. The question is, will you still be there when (or if) Squadron 42 finally launches? And more importantly, will you still care?
What do you think about this latest delay? Are you still holding out hope for Squadron 42, or have you given up on it long ago? Let us know in the comments!
