God of War Creator Slams Harassment of Laufey Director

Ever said something about a coworker that blew up way bigger than you expected? That's exactly what happened to David Jaffe, the original God of War creator, when his comments about Ariel Lawrence, creative director of the upcoming God of War Laufey, went viral.

Jaffe, who left Sony Santa Monica in 2007, opened up during a September 2026 livestream while reacting to Laufey footage. He admitted he and Lawrence never saw eye to eye back in the day. "Her and I never got along," he said. "She thought I was kind of obnoxious and I thought she was pretentious." He also claimed she lacked passion for the games and wasn't focused on the audience. Jaffe even took shots at Cory Barlog for making Laufey, calling it a "stupid" game.

Naturally, the internet ran with it. But instead of just debating Jaffe's hot take, some people used his words as ammunition to harass Lawrence online. That's when Jaffe stepped in to shut it down. On Twitter/X, he wrote, "For people to use my experience with Ariel as an excuse/launching pad to make personal attacks on her is just low and s**tty." He reminded everyone that she's a real person with feelings, and even joked about his own flaws: "I've looked in mine; that s**t's scary! You see this f**king beard?!?"

This isn't the first time Laufey has been targeted. When the game was revealed in June, trolls flooded social media with complaints about a woman leading a God of War game and even attacked actress Deborah Ann Woll's appearance. The noise died down a bit as other games like Insomniac's Wolverine became the new target, but Laufey still catches strays. Even The Last of Us director Bruce Straley used it as an example of why modern AAA games don't excite him—though he later apologized.

So what's the takeaway? Criticism is fair game, but turning personal beef into a harassment campaign is never okay. Jaffe may not have been Lawrence's biggest fan, but even he drew the line. It's a reminder that behind every game credit is a human being just trying to do their job.

God of War Laufey launches on February 16, 2027, exclusively for PlayStation 5. Will you be picking it up? And what do you think about Jaffe's response? Let us know in the comments.
