Ever dreamed of playing the original Crash Team Racing on PC in glorious 4K? Well, that dream just became a reality thanks to a new port called Crash Team Racing: Turbocharged. But there's a catch: it was made with the help of AI, and that's got the community divided.
For those who don't know, Crash Team Racing is the beloved PS1 kart racer from Naughty Dog that many argue is even better than Mario Kart. It's been stuck on retro consoles for years, but a group of dedicated coders have been decompiling it since 2021-2022. Their work, the CTR native project, paved the way for this new port. Turbocharged uses that decomp as a base and adds native-resolution rendering up to 4K and beyond, widescreen support, enhanced textures, and frame rates up to 240fps. And it's completely free.
Sounds amazing, right? But here's the twist: developer Camzie99 confirmed in a YouTube comment that they used Large Language Models (LLMs) to write code for the port. When a fan asked if it was 'vibe-coded,' Camzie99 replied, 'it depends on your definition of vibe coded I suppose.' They explained that they didn't just throw vague prompts at an AI; instead, they planned each feature, identified where changes were needed, and then had the LLM write code in smaller chunks, function by function or file by file, so it was easy to review. They even gave an example of using LLMs to implement PGXP, an enhancement that tackles PS1 polygonal wobbling.
So, is this a low-effort AI cash grab? Not exactly. Camzie99, who says they've been developing for 16 years, argues that all the decision-making, planning, and thought processing was done by them. The AI just generated the code. But that hasn't stopped the debate. Many in the community prefer ports made entirely by human hands, like the well-received MediEvil PC recomp. And while Camzie99 was upfront in a comment, there's no disclaimer on the official Turbocharged page or promotional materials, which some find deceptive.
For players who avoid AI-generated content, this is a tough call. A 4K PC port of the original Crash Team Racing sounds like a dream, but if you're staunchly against AI in game development, you might want to skip it. The author of the original piece says they'll stick to emulating the original on retro handhelds, playing on actual PS1 hardware, or diving into the Nitro Fueled remake instead.
So, what do you think? Does the use of AI for coding change your feelings about this port? Will you be picking it up, or does the AI involvement make you hit the brakes? Let us know in the comments!
