GTA 6 Nearly Had Four Protagonists—Here's Why Rockstar Changed It

Rockstar briefly considered doubling GTA 6's playable characters to four, but ultimately stuck with the criminal couple. Here's the inside scoop.

GTA 6 Nearly Had Four Protagonists—Here's Why Rockstar Changed It

Ever wondered what GTA 6 would be like with not two, but four playable characters? Well, you're not alone—Rockstar actually thought about it.

Following the massive success of GTA 5's three-protagonist setup, the studio briefly toyed with the idea of going even bigger for the next installment. But in the end, they decided to keep things more intimate with the criminal couple, Lucia and her partner.

In a recent interview, Rockstar's design director explained the thought process. 'We did consider four characters,' he said. 'But we quickly realized that it would spread the story too thin. With two, we can really focus on their relationship and give each character the depth they deserve.'

That's a smart move, right? Think about it—GTA 5's trio was awesome, but sometimes you felt like you didn't spend enough time with each character. By narrowing it down to two, Rockstar can craft a tighter, more personal narrative.

Plus, the dynamic between the two leads is a first for the series. Having a playable female protagonist is a big deal, and the chemistry between the pair is set to be a core part of the game's identity. Doubling the cast might have diluted that.

So, while four protagonists could have been a wild ride, it looks like Rockstar made the right call. Quality over quantity, right? We can't wait to see how Lucia and her partner's story unfolds when GTA 6 finally drops.

What do you think? Would you have liked four protagonists, or are you happy with the couple? Let us know in the comments!
